The house’s approach in creating the range: to increase parfum concentration, increase the dose of the central main ingredient in each fragrance, and, excitingly, add a new guest ingredient to each fragrance. The Extraits are not just the old fragrances but stronger, they’re elevated in every way.

Creative approach: A powerful and intense fragrance that highlights the beauty of its main natural ingredient, Saffron Oil Greece, considered to be the most qualitative saffron in the world. Matiere Premiere Founder and Perfumer Aurélien Guichard has enriched the original Crystal Saffron Eau de Parfum with Myrrh Oil Somalia as a guest ingredient. Combined with a higher perfume concentration and an even higher dosage of saffron, Myrrh brings a round ambery richness to the radiant, vibrant facets of Crystal Saffron.

HOW IT WEARS
Straight away, with just one spritz, Crystal Saffron Extrait fills the entire space you’re in – this is definitely a beast mode fragrance! Still beginning with the bright, golden warmth of saffron, the Extrait differs from the original with its use of myrrh, which in the opening has already helped to round out the potential astringency or sharpness of the saffron note. This allows for the appearace of olfactory facets we didn’t get to see in the original Crystal Saffron– the saffron feels more honeyed, perhaps even floral. In the dry down you still get the frankincense, but again the myrrh has just tempered it a little, making it feel less mineralic and sharp. The musks then work together to simultaneously amplify and ground the fragrance, helping it to last for 10+ hours of wear on the skin!

Where the original Crystal Saffron is a crystalline, pure saffron fragrance – like smelling the dried fronds of the crocus flower up close, the Extrait takes those fronds and melts them in resin, softening them, allowing them to release all their olfactory facets, kind of like how you would toast aromatics in a pan to help to release their full flavour when cooking. This fragrance is therefore more complex than the original while at the same time feeling smoother. Crystal Saffron Extrait is a truly breathtaking scent, and we think really honours the timeless beauty and intrigue of “red gold”.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Debuted in 2019, Matiere Premiere (or “Raw Materials” in French) is the work of renowned nose and master perfumer, Aurélien Guichard.
The core objective of the Matiere Premiere range is to put a spotlight on some of the most precious fragrance materials from around the world, and to hero the beauty and elegance of a single note fragrance.
A 7th generation perfumer born in Grasse (arguably the perfume capital of the world), Aurélien Guichard has a passion for fragrance running through his veins. He has been the nose behind nearly one hundred fragrances and has worked with brands such as Givenchy, Narcisco Rodriguez, Gucci and Commes de Garcons.
Guichard is also the owner of an organic farm where he produces Rose Centifolia and Tuberose, some of which is used in the Matiere Premiere line, making it one of the only brands in the world to own and produce some of the raw materials used in their fragrances.
