The house’s approach in creating the range: to increase parfum concentration, increase the dose of the central main ingredient in each fragrance, and, excitingly, add a new guest ingredient to each fragrance. The Extraits are not just the old fragrances but stronger, they’re elevated in every way.

Creative approach: A creamy sandalwood fragrance, powerful and long lasting. Founder and Perfumer Aurélien Guichard has brought Black Cardamom Absolute Nepal, exclusively developed for Matiere Premiere, as a guest ingredient to the original Santal Austral Eau de Parfum. Combined with a higher perfume concentration and an even higher dosage of the main natural ingredient, Organic Sandalwood Oil Australia, Black Cardamom brings a unique intensity, taking Santal Austral to more spicy and vibrant territories.

HOW IT WEARS
Santal Austral Extrait opens quite similarly to the original (although obviously stronger!) – the bright, waxy iris, the creamy almond and sandalwood start out the wear of the scent. It’s only after it’s warmed up a little on the skin that you begin to pick up the black cardamom – sweet, resinous, but still with a little green spicy bite, which works to highlight the unique sharp edge of the Australian sandalwood. The golden benzoin resin and the slight sweetness of the tonka bean are also amplified, elevating the composition and making it feel warmer on the skin. This Extrait will last 10+ hours on the skin and will give you incredible projection in that time!

Where the original Santal Austral was a smooth, creamy, waxy sandalwood fragrance, Santal Austral Extrait is deeper, spicier, warmer, sweeter, and feels somehow even more opulent than the original. Cardamom is one of those notes that has the ability to do so many things, and complements almost everything, but we think it pairs particularly well with Australian sandalwood, helping to shine a spotlight on the uniqueness of our beautiful native wood.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Debuted in 2019, Matiere Premiere (or “Raw Materials” in French) is the work of renowned nose and master perfumer, Aurélien Guichard.
The core objective of the Matiere Premiere range is to put a spotlight on some of the most precious fragrance materials from around the world, and to hero the beauty and elegance of a single note fragrance.
A 7th generation perfumer born in Grasse (arguably the perfume capital of the world), Aurélien Guichard has a passion for fragrance running through his veins. He has been the nose behind nearly one hundred fragrances and has worked with brands such as Givenchy, Narcisco Rodriguez, Gucci and Commes de Garcons.
Guichard is also the owner of an organic farm where he produces Rose Centifolia and Tuberose, some of which is used in the Matiere Premiere line, making it one of the only brands in the world to own and produce some of the raw materials used in their fragrances.
